Hair Transplant with DHI Technique:
What is the Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) technique?
Hair Transplantation with the DHI Technique
Hair loss is a common problem that affects a large number of people worldwide. More than 85% of men experience hair loss by the age of 50, while around 50% of women face the same issue. In recent years, many solutions and techniques have been developed to treat hair loss, and one of the most advanced and effective is the Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) technique.
The hair transplant process primarily relies on transferring hair follicles from a donor area to a recipient area suffering from baldness. The doctor extracts the follicles from the back of the head, known as the donor area, and then implants them into the bald spots, leading to the growth of new, healthy hair in those areas.
The DHI technique is considered an advanced development of the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique, with similar steps being followed. However, there are significant differences between the two techniques. In FUE, the doctor first opens the hair channels and then gradually implants the follicles one by one. In contrast, in the DHI technique, the channels are opened and the follicles are implanted simultaneously using an innovative tool called the “Choi Pen,” making the process more precise and faster.
DHI Hair Transplant Techniques
During the DHI hair transplant procedure, hair follicles are extracted from the donor area, after which the doctor simultaneously opens the hair channels and implants the grafts using the advanced “Choi Pen” tool. The procedure takes approximately 6 to 8 hours, during which up to 3,500 extracted hair follicles can be implanted.
There are two main methods that can be followed within the DHI technique, depending on the patient’s condition and the desired results:
Mega DHI Technique
This method allows for the transplantation of up to 7,000 hair follicles, with the procedure being performed over two sessions on consecutive days. The Mega DHI technique provides greater hair density for patients who desire more noticeable results.Extremely DHI Technique
This method follows the same steps as the traditional DHI technique but allows for the transplantation of up to 5,000 hair follicles in a single session, which lasts between 12 to 15 hours. This technique provides high density in a shorter period of time.
Candidates for DHI Hair Transplantation
The DHI hair transplant technique is not suitable for all cases, but it is considered appropriate for specific groups. Men and women suffering from androgenic alopecia, commonly known as male or female pattern baldness, are among the primary candidates who can benefit from this technique.
To be an ideal candidate for hair transplantation using the DHI technique, the following criteria should be met:
- Age: The candidate should be over 25 years old, as hair loss before this age is considered uncommon.
- General Health: The candidate must be in good overall health to ensure the body can tolerate the procedure and recover properly.
- Hair Density: The donor area should be rich in hair follicles, with sufficient density per square centimeter to meet the requirements for hair transplantation.
- Hair Thickness: Individuals with thicker hair typically achieve better results compared to those with finer hair.

Stages of Hair Transplantation Using the DHI Technique
The hair transplantation process using the DHI technique goes through several precise stages to ensure the best results:
Stage One: In this stage, the donor area and the balding area are assessed, and their density and the number of follicles to be harvested are determined. The expert also draws a new hairline that suits the patient’s natural appearance.
Stage Two: The patient undergoes a series of necessary medical tests, such as blood tests and skin examinations, to ensure their health is suitable for the procedure.
Stage Three: Only the donor area is shaved to facilitate the extraction of the follicles. Afterward, the patient is given local anesthesia to minimize pain during the procedure.
Stage Four: The doctor begins extracting hair follicles from the donor area using a precise device called a “micromotor.” The follicles are then stored in a special saline solution called Hypothermosol to maintain their viability for as long as possible.
Stage Five: In the final stage, the extracted follicles are transplanted. Using Choi pens, channels are opened and the follicles are implanted in a single step with precise, careful insertion, ensuring the hair is transplanted accurately and quickly.
